FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Horst in Translation ([email protected]) "Kitty Foiled" is an American cartoon from 1948, so this one has its 70th anniversary this year. It was written and directed by Hanna Barbera and this makes this another Tom and Jerry production of course that runs for over 7 minutes slightly as they do most of the time. They are going with the usual formula of adding a new supporting character to spice things up between the cat and mouse and this time it is a canary. And he is great fun, makes a nice little cute couple with Jerry and the two are just fun together while Tom isn't too shabby either and honestly you must have wondered when Tom will finally find another target and here he does. You can see that western films were really popular around that time as the part with the gun, the Indian scene and the final train scene all stood for that and they were all pretty hilarious. Tom's looks up on that train near the end were so hilarious as if insanity has gotten the better of him and he turned into Ca(p)tain Ahab eventually. I enjoyed this little film really a lot and it is far better than all the WB Sylvester/Tweety stuff, especially as this canary here is 100 times better than Tweety. It does not need the Oscar attention for me to say that here we have one of my favorite Tom and Jerry works and it gets even better on rewatch. Nice inclusion of Auld Lang Syne too. An absolute must-watch, not just for lovers of old cartoons.
Tweekums This Tom and Jerry short opens with a shot of a canary in its cage; in the background we can hear the sort of mayhem that can only mean Tom and Jerry are at it again! We then see Tom is in hot pursuit of Jerry, smashing things as he goes. It soon looks as if Jerry is done for but the canary comes to his rescue. The rest of the short involves Tom chasing the canary, who is then rescued by Jerry and Tom chasing Jerry who is rescued by the canary and Tom chasing both of them. Inevitably Tom comes off much worse as he is battered by the two creatures he is trying to catch. There is no real plot to this short; just a succession of chases and comic ways for Tom to get hurt. Probably not politically correct these days but I couldn't help laughing when Jerry disguised himself as an Indian and said 'How' in a really deep voice! Another highlight was when Tom tied Jerry to the tracks of a model railway and prepared to run him over with a train only to be foiled when the little bird dropped a heavy bowling ball on the tracks... utterly ridiculous but still funny! Overall its not the best Tom and Jerry cartoon but it has plenty of good laughs; I'm sure youngsters will love it along with those who enjoyed it as a child.
Shawn Watson Kitty Foiled is one of the blandest and most generic T&J shorts I have ever seen. I don't think I laughed once. Every gag is a rehash lifted from another cartoon. How many times has Tom's teeth been smashed like a window now? The short has T&J already involved in a pointless chase as soon as it starts. A canary (an annoying new character) witnesses what appears to be Jerry's potential demise and interrupts to save him by attacking Tom, Jerry then saves the canary in a similar way. The bird and the mouse then team up to make the kitty's life hell with lots of boring assaults on Tom. And I just don't care.
ccthemovieman-1 Tom is wrecking the house, smashing everything in sight with a broom while trying to hit Jerry. The little canary in the bird cage sees Jerry in big trouble, gets out his cage and comes to the mouse's rescue. Jerry then chases the bird, and he when he's got him and ready to move in for the kill, Jerry returns the favor and rescues the little yellow-feathered guy. Those two then escape for a breather in Jerry's mouse hole. They shake hands and become a team, doing battle with the cat.The whole cartoon has a lot of funny and clever scenes. This is one of the better Tom and Jerry efforts and makes me realize once again how talented there writers were on these animated short subjects. This is "Exhibit A" why these cartoons were so popular.
