Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Adeel Hail Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Lord-Bigglesworth This was a thoroughly entertaining film with a lot of great things to say, but there are definitely many aspects of this film that could've used a bit more polish. The script is fantastically witty and provides plenty of opportunities not only to entertain the viewer but to give them some mental food to chew on and most of the actors gave great performances. However, there were some rather jarring aspects of the film that distracted from the viewing experience. Many scenes suffer from continuity and editing issues: like the position or disposition of the actors changes from one cut to the next or what actually happened in the scene is hard to follow because of huge, sudden jumps from one event to the next. And while most of the actors were great, Zoe Kravitz seemed to be really out of her depth here. I didn't realize it was her until the end credits, but I kept wondering why the chemistry between her character and Malcolm was so incredible confusing: "is she TRYING to put him in the friend-zone?" I kept asking myself. Overall, that entire relationship could've been left completely out of the movie and the film might've been better off for it.This last film-making gripe probably wouldn't bother too many people, but I also thought the sound was terrible, at least in regard to dialogue. There were many scenes that were out in the open but it was painfully obvious that the dialogue and or "live" music was recorded in a studio. This is the potential spoiler part...Oh, and while I thought much of what the film had to say about race or growing-up-in-the-ghetto issues was rather profound and seemed on-point, there's one line from the film on that subject that is still just frustratingly grating on me. On his revised Harvard application, Malcolm ends it with "'So why do I want to go to Harvard??'--if I was white would you even have to ask me that?" Just... WTF dude. YES OF COURSE THEY ASK WHITE PEOPLE WHY THEY WANT TO GO TO HARVARD!!! It's hard for anyone and everyone (except maybe the offspring of rich, heavily-donating Harvard alumni) to get in to Harvard. Talk about a self-created sense of persecution. Despite all those flaws though, it was still an incredibly entertaining and enjoyable film.
Brandon Mackenzie Dope is one of my favorite films because i feel as though a lot of people can relate to this movie in some way. Growing up entering high school, kids are exposed to more drugs, bullying, and violence. The main character, Malcolm, is nervous about talking to pretty girls and then when he's invited to a birthday party, The place ends up getting shot up for the drugs that were there. Dom , played by A$AP Rocky, put a lot of drugs into Malcolm's book bag while the club was being raided and Malcolm doesn't know. Later on he ends up selling drugs and then using that in a college resume to Harvard. He said he "made a business over 100 thousand dollars in 3 weeks". The ending scene was one of the best parts of the film as well. It was Malcolm pretty much reading off his resume to Harvard and I find it kind of inspirational
peefyn The acting, the soundtrack, the setting, the plot and the comedy were all great in this movie. It had its slow moments, but mostly the story keeps racing on in a thrilling pace. I do wish that there had been more actual 90s rap in this movie, for reasons that are obvious if you have seen the movie, but I did like the soundtrack they wound up using too.The ending lends itself to a good discussion. The moral of the story seems to be a bit darker than what really fits the rest of the picture, where the main character has to make some choices to get what he wants, because of the circumstances he is in. Now, this could be seen as him facing reality, looking away from his own world view - and that is how I prefer to look at it. But it could easily also be seen as him giving up his ideals, and getting pressured into doing what's expected from him (in some sense, I am being very vague here so that it can't be considered a spoiler).
